Saving money and the planet with recyclable coffee cups
Takeaway coffee is big business: 2.5 billion coffee cups used in the UK each year but only one in 12 is currently being recycled. Whether you run a coffee shop, cafe or are simply planning a party, you’re likely to be all too aware of the impact that single use plastic cups are having upon the environment. How coffee cups can be recycled
Standard coffee cups can’t be recycled because they’re made from plastic coated paper which won’t break down in standard recycling processes. This means that the majority of single use coffee cups currently end up in landfill. To compound the problem, different local authorities have different approaches to recycling.
Recyclable coffee cups help address the problem. We work closely with our product partners and local authorities. To keep things as simple as possible for you and your customers, our products are organised into three main recycling types: recyclable, compostable and biodegradable. Here’s how it works:
- Recyclable: these products can be sorted by your local authority in the usual way. Once sorted they are washed, shredded and melted before being transformed into new products.
- Compostable: our compostable products are certified as compostable which means they are designed to break down in under 90 days under industrial composting conditions. If composted at home the process might take longer but this depends on your composter and conditions.
- Biodegradable: when plastic goes into landfill it can take up to 1000 years to fully biodegrade. Our biodegradable products take much less time than this, providing an industrial scale composter is used. With this in mind, our biodegradable products shouldn’t be disposed of with other recyclable materials - they’ll need to be biodegraded with other compostable items.
All local authorities are different and this is why we provide guidance on exactly how each product is to be processed. Full details on product-specific recycling can be found on each product page on our website.
