Products designed to stop the tide of single use plastics

Plastic has been manufactured commercially since the start of the 20th century and since that time it’s estimated that over 8 billion tons has been produced. The majority of this has either ended up in landfill or polluting the environment.

When you consider that plastic can take more than 400 years to degrade and that most plastic products are made for single use only, something has to change. The vast majority of single use coffee cups contain plastic and due to their plastic content, 99% will never be recycled.

Refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, rot - not all ecoffee cups are created equal

It’s our aim to provide you with a range of products which provide ethical and sustainable alternatives to single use plastic takeaway cups, lids and cutlery etc. However, not all plastics are made in the same way which means that different products need to be processed in various ways. To complicate things further, UK local authorities use varying methods for collecting and processing plastics.

We believe keeping things as simple as possible and this is why we have broken down the sustainable material types used into three recycling types:

• Compostable: compostable ecoffee cups are best disposed of in your compost bin at home or in an industrial composter by your local authority. When industrially composted, our compostable products will break down within 90 days; however this will take longer in a home composter, depending on conditions and the method used. Although they look and feel like the varieties which are made with plastic lining, they mustn’t be disposed of with plastic recycling.
• Biodegradable: when disposed of in landfill, plastic can take up to 1000 years to biodegrade fully. Our biodegradable products are designed to complete the process much quicker, provided they are composted in special industrial scale composters.
• Recyclable: products made from recyclable materials can be recycled by your local authority in the usual way. Once they’ve been processed, the materials used to make these products are melted into pellets before being made into new products. Whilst none of our current products fall into this category, this will change as our range of stock grows.
