Who we are

Single Use Alternatives was founded by Adrian and Neil; two brothers who are passionate about enjoying the outdoors and caring for the environment. Concerned about the impact single use plastics are having upon the environment, we decided to offer a range of cost effective high quality, alternative products.

Plastic free food packaging that can save the planet, and your pocket

With increasingly more brands and businesses across the Yorkshire region adopting the tenets of the five R's - ‘Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle’ - we decided to make the process for purchasing, where needed, plastic-free packaging, simple and affordable.

After speaking with local Yorkshire businesses, we found that reducing their use of single plastics was at the forefront of their minds, but the cost and unavailability of  realistic alternatives made it difficult. Our goal is to change this by providing a huge range of affordable eco friendly food packaging that won’t cost the earth.

Our products are comparable to standard plastic alternatives in two ways, price and quality. That however, is where the comparisons stop. From coffee cups and fast food packaging, to ice cream pots, burger boxes and paper bags - our products use plant-based versions of petrochemical plastics that don't take 100s (if not 1000s) of years to decompose, making it that bit simpler for your business to reduce the impact it makes on our planet.

Buy 100s not 1000s

Our website is designed to provide you with a secure, simple and user-friendly environment to browse and order from our product range. Our entire business model is built around ease and flexibility, so we don’t set a minimum order value, you can order in realistic quantities, not just in 1000s - and we provide a number of low-cost delivery options nationwide, including next day. We even offer discounts on bulk orders of some products - please see the details of each product for further information.

Biodegradable and compostable - whats the difference?

We've carefully selected a product range full of ethical packaging alternatives that are either reusable, compostable or biodegradable. As a general measure, compostable products can be either recycled by your local council in an industrial composter or in some cases, disposed of in your garden compost bin - though it will take longer. Industrial composting is significantly quicker than home composting, but not all councils yet offer a collection service for composting. Luckily, though the process will take longer in your home bin, you can compost most of our products at home.

Our biodegradable products can also be recycled in an industrial composter, where composting conditions are magnified compared to those at home. The Maltings are our local industrial composting facility and provide a fantastic service, check with your local authority to see where the closest composter is to you and you can start that journey too.

Closing the loop

Closing the loop is more than a turn of phrase, it represents a movement where businesses and individuals are attempting to bridge the gap between the use of plastic alternatives, and the ability to sustainably dispose of them. As new biodegradable food packaging products come on to the market, a different infrastructure is required to sort and process them, with processing plants varying from council to council.

Those in the industry know that the products are available to buy, but through no fault of their own, consumer awareness is lacking. This is then compounded by difficulties for businesses to source these products and the idea that plastic alternatives cost more. Our aim is to change this. We offer a wide range of cost-effective alternatives to single use plastics. Available in realistic quantities for convenient delivery, direct to your door.
