Ovenable Trays

Heat resistant packaging, ready for cooking in an oven or microwave, has been one of the developments that has ensured that foodstuffs can make it from the caterers shelves to plate, without it being directly handled.

With the ever-growing focus on the environmental impact of packaging waste, more consumers are considering the packaging as much as the product, and ovenable trays, like the eco friendly ovenable trays we sell here, can be taken from the fridge and put straight in the oven or microwave.

Who we are

Single Use Alternatives was founded by Adrian and Neil; two brothers who are passionate about enjoying the outdoors and caring for the environment. Concerned about the impact single use plastics are having upon the environment, we decided to offer a range of cost effective range of high quality, alternative products.

No mess, and more convenience with ovenable trays

Functionality and end result are essential to consumers. Ovenable trays need to be simple, easy to use, and clean. If the tray is messy to open when it is cooked, it might put the consumer off from buying the product again. Single Use Alternatives ovenable trays are made from high quality board and are treated with a grease and moisture barrier, with leak proof corners and fold down lid flaps. We even tested them by leaving hot water sitting in them for 45 minutes and found no leaks or deterioration in the container structure.

Ovenable trays are perfect for takeaway food packaging, fast food packaging, and lots more.

Plastic free ovenable trays

Not all products which tout themselves as recyclable are all that they appear to be. Some ovenable trays available do contain plastics, as the UK government allows cardboard and paperboard packaging with less than 5% plastic to still carry a recyclable symbol. There are various ways manufacturers seeking to pull the wool over consumers' eyes can get around this; for example by increasing the thickness of the cardboard used in the packaging so that the plastic content falls below the 5% threshold.

Unfortunately, ovenable trays made with up to 5% plastic can't be composted, so they're destined to end up either incinerated or as landfill.

The ovenable rectangular takeaway trays that Single Use Alternatives sell go a step further than being able to be industrially composted: they are fully certified as home compostable, breaking down into a natural organic state when placed in a composting environment (like your garden compost heap). The benefits here are obvious, as there are no further trips for the packaging to take once you've heated the contents and eaten them. They can simply be disposed of in your own garden after composting.

Who we are

Compostable ovenable trays: their role in the circular economy

Compost is critical to the future of soil health. Nationally, agri-food businesses recognise that compost has a massive role to play in the future sustainability of food supplies. More locally, your garden benefits hugely from compost that you've created, building fertility and giving the soil solid foundation.

Ovenable trays manufactured from home compostable material are one small cog in the wheel to close the loop. They play their part in enabling a change from the traditional linear production model, in which used products simply get destroyed or landfilled. The circular model, having recyclable and compostable packaging at its core, creates a loop pattern. Each step from design and use, through to end-of-life, offers solutions to create positive value by avoiding resource waste, decreasing the negative impact on the environment.
