Notpla Takeaway Packaging

a revolutionary material made from seaweed and plants. It biodegrades in 4-6 weeks, naturally. No micro-plastics, no waste for centuries. This natural material has now been applied to a range of hot food takeaway boxes, making packaging truly disappear!

Finally, a truly viable alternative to traditional plastic, bioplastic-lined, and PFAs-containing takeaway boxes! Notpla Takeaway box is a Notpla packaging solution to reduce plastic waste in the takeaway sector.

The creators, are a sustainable packaging start-up founded in 2014, they are hard to define because what they’re doing hasn’t been done before. A combination of designers, chemists, engineers and entrepreneurs. They create advanced packaging solutions made from seaweed and other natural materials as an alternative to single-use plastic.

They have received multiple awards and grants from Innovate UK and the Ellen Macarthur Foundation for their innovative original product “Ooho” – an edible and fully biodegradable sauce & drink sachet. Their portfolio has now extended with multiple innovation solutions such as seaweed lined ‘notpla’, home compostable, hot food takeaway boxes (as featured with partner Just Eat).

These hot food takeaway boxes are made from one of nature’s most renewable resources, brown seaweed, which grows up to 1m per day, it doesn’t compete with food crops, doesn’t need fresh water or fertiliser and actively contributes to de-acidifying our oceans.

A typical cardboard takeaway food box either has synthetic additives added directly into the pulp or a coating made from PE or PLA, or in many cases, they have both! These plastic and synthetic additives need to decompose or be recycled in specific processes. In contrast, Notpla replaces these plastic additives with a 100% vegan seaweed-based alternative.

Notpla takeaway boxes are recyclable, home compostable, and even naturally biodegradable!

Notpla seaweed-lined boxes mean customers can feel good about their meal, and as they’re water and grease-resistant, microwaveable, stackable and as easy to use as standard kraft boxes restaurants can feel good as well.

Food Packaging made to disappear: reasons to go sustainable

The problems caused by plastic pollution in the environment have received worldwide attention over recent years. When you consider that of the 8.3 billion tons of plastic that’s ever been produced, more than 6 billion is now either waste in landfill or environmental pollution, something has to be done.

Plastic can take over 400 years to fully degrade, with most of the plastic produced still existing in some form. As most plastic is manufactured for just one single use, we need to change our ways.

Switching from single use plastic disposables to products such as Notpla offers an important way to make a big difference to the planet. At Single Use Alternatives it is our mission to make the switch as easy as possible by offering Notpla products at competitive prices, with convenient doorstep delivery and online ordering. In addition, because we don’t set a minimum order value you’ll be able to order in quantities which are realistic for you; whether you need 200 Notpla boxes or 1000s. It also goes without saying we pass on more savings to you if you buy more too.

Who we are

Single Use Alternatives was founded by Adrian and Neil; two brothers who are passionate about enjoying the outdoors and caring for the environment.
