How our eco food packaging products are recycled

Since plastic was first manufactured commercially, it is estimated that over 8 billion tons has been produced. The vast majority of plastic waste either ends up in landfills or as plastic pollution. As plastic can take over 400 years to degrade and most of the plastic ever made still exists in some form, something has to change.

There is now huge publicity surrounding the problem of plastic pollution and we now know we have to find a different approach. However, because local authorities have different recycling strategies which vary from region to region, it can be difficult to know what to do. In addition, the situation is further compounded by the expense and lack of availability of alternatives to single use plastic products.

We are working hard to help our customers move towards using sustainable alternatives to single use disposable products, whilst ‘closing the loop’ between the recycling facilities in your area, making it as easy as possible to process what you use.

Our eco food packaging products are grouped into categories according to the materials used to make them and how they can be processed once they’ve been used. The categories we use are Compostable, Biodegradable and Recyclable:

• Compostable: compostable materials can take around 90 days to break down when an industrial composter is used. The process takes longer in a home composter. Although our compostable products might look and feel just like plastic, they mustn’t be placed with plastic recycling.
• Biodegradable: in a similar way to composting, the biodegrading process needs oxygen. This means that these products need to processed in special industrial scale composters if they are to fully biodegrade as quickly as possible. Please note that not all local authorities have the capability to do this so you’ll need to check the situation in your area.
• Recyclable: at present none of our products are recyclable. Plastics have to be sorted, shredded, washed and melted into pellets before they can be made into new products. These new products can be made either from fossil-based or bio-based materials but this does not mean that they will biodegrade.
