Compostable Glassware

If you’re organising an outside event, or selling drinks at a festival, the chances are that you’ve considered using plastic glasses. But whilst standard plastic glasses are convenient and disposable, they don’t have a great effect on the environment. A range of compostable glassware is now available, which is designed to provide an environmentally friendly, cost effective alternative to regular oil based plastic.

Who we are

Single Use Alternatives was founded by Adrian and Neil; two brothers who are passionate about enjoying the outdoors and caring for the environment. Concerned about the impact single use plastics are having upon the environment, we decided to offer a range of cost effective high quality, alternative products.

Vegware Wine Glasses from Vegware

Our plant based wine goblets are a perfect way to serve wine to your guests, in a way that won’t harm the environment. Perfect for wine, cold drinks, canapes or desserts, these fully compostable wine goblets are made from PLA, a renewable alternative to plastic, made from plants and not oil.

Our compostable glassware is made from plastic derived from plant sugars. The process extracts glucose from milled corn, which is then fermented to produce lactic acid, processed into a polymer and made into pellets. From there, the PLA is used to mold clear products, like our compostable wine glasses.

As our wine glasses are from Vegware, you can be sure that they hold the deepest set of compostability certificates in the sector. The full product range can be commercially composted with food waste (where this is accepted), and has been independently verified to break down within 12 weeks in industrial composting facilities.

Composting standards in Europe include the following elements, and our compostable glassware adheres rigidly to them:

Biodegradation – materials turn to soil through microbial action at the same rate as cellulose (paper)

Disintegration – the materials fall into small pieces

Eco-toxicity – seeds can germinate in the resulting compost, meaning it is useful for plant growth

Heavy metals – the compost is safe to go onto land

Compostable glassware looks like non-recyclable counterparts

Although Vegware's stylish eco wine glasses look similar to normal plastic cups that you'd be used to being served a glass of wine in at outdoor events, they are 100% compostable.

Composting is an important way we can close the loop with otherwise throwaway items. Vegware's compostable wine glasses can be either commercially composted by your local council, or through Vegwares post back schemes . Commercial composting can take up to 90 days. Take a look at our composting page for some tips on how to go about it.

Are compostable food and drink containers the way forward for business?

To tackle the eye-watering amounts of food packaging that are thrown away and destined for landfill every year, forward thinking businesses have looked at their own role in the harms being done to the planet, and have stepped in to help, by buying compostable instead of single use plastics. With local councils engaging more readily with composting solutions for business, it’s more obvious that now is the time to give single use plastics the boot in your business, and switch to compostable. Currently in the UK, trade composting collections are available in 55 of the largest towns and cities, which covers 71% of the UK’s urban population.
